PROVIDING VITAL RESOURCES TO GRASSROOTS RESISTANCE
At the Social Justice and Solidarity Fund we are playing our part to make sure grassroots resisters get the resources they need. They are fighting attacks on unions’ right to exist, on immigrants, and on our basic democratic rights. We applaud those who are in the streets and organizing in their workplaces. They are doing the necessary emergency tasks of today as well as long-term base-building. And we put our money where our mouth is.
It has been disappointing, to say the least, to see how most union leaders have been largely AWOL in combating Trumpism. That’s why we fund rank-and-file union reform movements that can make their unions into what they need to be.
Since our founding in late 2022, we’ve awarded $1.3 million to an array of working class organizations. We’re growing: our total grants for 2025 will exceed $700,000. Our website lists all our grantees.
One grantee is the Caucus of Rank-and-file Electrical Workers (CREW), a movement in the largest building trades union. Earlier this year they had a successful founding gathering and now are ready to hire a staffer to help organize across the country.
We are also helping out UAW Member Action as it develops its member trainings in the basics of unionism—still badly needed in UAW locals despite the welcome changes at the top of that union. UAWMA will be educating members on the need to hold on to their right to vote on top officers, as the UAW convention approaches next year.
You can read about these and our dozen other grantees on our website.
This support is only possible because of our donors. We appreciate estate donations and the many who are giving us their IRA Required Minimum Distribution (which has tax advantages for the donor). We are pleased that virtually all of our donors are recurring ones—but we seek new donors, as the struggle for justice only looks to become tougher. We especially appreciate the support of the 128 Collective, targeted toward insurgent caucuses. See How to Donate for info on expressing solidarity.
We invite you to get in touch before 2025 ends. If you’re already a contributor, do you know someone else who should be one too? If you give us names we are happy to contact your friends. We are proud that 99% of our income goes directly to grantees; we have almost no overhead. You can read About Us for background – or contact one of our board members. Your feedback is critical to our work.
